What is mineral wool insulation?

Mineral wool or rock wool, as it is commonly known, is manufactured from steel slag. This slag is what is left over after steel is produced and contains dirt and limestone. It is mixed with other chemicals and heated together. The fibrous material that is produced is spun to form mineral wool. The entire process gives the material excellent insulation properties and makes it ideal for use in both residential and commercial applications in different forms.

Benefits of using mineral wool insulation

This kind of insulation material has greater density and is water resistant. It is also fire resistant and hence used widely in many applications. Other advantages of this material include durability, is easily installed either in the form of batts or as loose-fill. It also resists mold and mildew and is not known to rot, burn or melt. Also, because it does not absorb moisture, it is an excellent insulation material and highly recommended by insulation contractors.

Safety measures in the use of mineral wool insulation

Since the mineral wool insulation products are made from very small fibers, they are likely to affect the eyes and skin of the worker or the handyman. These fibers may also cause problems to the lungs due to inhalation of dust. Adequate protective gear must be used by the person or contractor installing mineral wool insulation. People not directly involved in the installation should keep away from the work area till it has not been cleaned. It is highly recommended that only an insulation contractor must be allowed to install mineral wool insulation.
