Basement Design

If the house has an unfinished basement with enough space it can be converted into a living space. Basement can be decorated to suit one’s taste. Utilities can be walled off and the exposed pipes can be covered or rerouted to make space for a complete livable room conversion. Replacing old or damaged surfaces such as walls, ceilings and floors might be all that’s necessary to make a room look great. You can install new windows or decrease the size of the existing windows to make the basement bright or dark, as per the taste.

Tips for Basement Design

Compared to the other rooms, the basement is dark so it has to be brightly lit if there is not much of natural light coming inside. Remove the columns and post as is practical. If necessary, new walls can be installed to conceal the posts and columns wherever possible. Use horizontal design elements to make the room look spacious. Basement is the damp area so water resistant flooring like tiles, vinyl, or area rugs has to be used. To maximise lighting go for French doors instead of solid doors. Include a new heating system with its own thermostat to keep the room warm during winters.

Basement Design with Bright Colors

The walls and the ceiling of the basement should be given bright color schemes since this is the darkest room in the house. Use the varying bright shades of blue, orange, yellow or green. The upholstery of the furnitures in the basement should be bright. If there is already a couch in the basement put a bright slipcover to change the look. Use unique and light colored rugs on the floor to add texture and variety to the floor. Also decorate the walls with good art works. Hang the arts and pictures slightly lower than on the other rooms.

When the need for more living space arises, you can by-pass the attic, forget the backyard and turn to the basement. Decorating the basement is simple and cost-effective. Since basement is beneath and surrounded by earth the temperature remains constant throughout the year. During summer the room is cooler compared to other rooms and winter it is colder than other rooms. Separate heating system has to be installed to heat the room. The basement can be used as a playroom, exercise area, guest space and office room.
