Most, if not all providers want you to use the cellular phone that you own exclusively with their wireless service. That’s the main reason for locking your phone in the first place. So once you’ve managed to grab yourself an unlocked cellular phone, chances are your carrier will find a way to re-lock the phone again, tying you to their service. With the technology available today, it is hypothetically very easy for them to do this. In addition, once the phone is locked for their service, there is no guarantee that you’ll be able to get the codes necessary to unlock it again.
Unlocked Cellular Phone Hassle #2: Unlocked Phones Are a More Attractive Target for Stealing
Stolen cellular phones are a big problem, especially in the United States. Take a quick look at internet sites such as EBay or even the free classified advertisement sites, chances are there are a few stolen cellular phones on the auction block. Since most of the choices presented are an unlocked cellular phone, if yours is already unlocked, it stands to reason that it could be a more popular target.
Unlocked Cellular Phone Hassle # 3: Unlocking Codes Are Becoming More Complicated
As stated earlier, most carriers want you to use the phone exclusively with their service. So, to discourage phones from being unlocked, most providers make codes that are very complicated. In addition, they are often changed on a regular basis. In fact, some providers are starting to combat the idea of an unlocked cellular phone by putting the lock to the phone directly into the program of the phone. And to add insult to injury, there are companies out there that will gladly sell these complicated codes to you, for a “nominal fee.” I have yet to find one that actually guarantees that their codes will work.
Whether or not you chose to have an unlocked cellular phone is entirely up to you. Some people find it to be one of the best ideas they have come across, while others run into nothing but trouble. As always, before you make the decision to do anything, make sure you can deal with the consequences of your choice.
