Where Can I Purchase a Bonsai Pot Online?

Most any web business that hawks bonsai plants or trees will sell you a bonsai pot to set up your new plant. There are, however, some more imaginative or authentic sites that will help add history and mystique to your garden.

Online Vendors

Bonsaimonk.com is a website maintained by Bonsai by the Monastery Greenhouse—the monks sell bonsai pottery, tools, and related items imported from Japan, China, and Korea. The monks claim to have the largest bonsai pot selection in the United States, as well as the largest selection of Tokoname pottery from Japan. The greenhouse and monastery are located in Conyers, Georgia.

Tokoname is the largest Japanese maker of Bonsai pottery. If you are intent on purchasing a bonsai pot from Japan, they have a site online, but it also takes some deciphering to figure out the Japanese-oriented pages. There are dozens of shapes and sizes, and quite honestly, many resemble ashtrays or flower pots. There is a Japanese word, choukaku, which means “rectangle” in Japanese. Many of the Tokoname pots are found under that heading. Again, there are names for all the colors, but before sending to Japan for one of these pots, consider browsing their gallery online and then heading down to Wal-Mart or Target to find something similar to the bonsai pot you admired online.

Sizes from Tokoname range from 2.4 inches to 32.8 inches. There are six galleries of pots and sizes that are not very impressive to the average consumer, although it might help you to identify some unusual or odd-shaped pottery you have lying around the house.

The Stone Lantern online offers Tokoname pots at a considerably reduced price, sometimes as much as 15 percent off retail. New England Bonsai also offers Tokoname Bonsai pots, although those pictured seemed to be a bit more ornate that others found in the gallery previously mentioned. Bonsai Boy of New York offers a nice selection of pottery, as does Brussel’s Bonsai Nursery.

Unbelievably, there is even a site entitled, PotsForBonsai.com. Who would have thought it would be that easy to find a source for a Bonsai pot. The website is very professional and quite informative. The Chinese company has a great deal to offer, both in terms of pots and other furnishings. The Bonsai Primer website offers a section for someone who wants to find a bonsai pot that is a bit unusual, and also offers an alternative to the classic bonsai pot in terms of rock or tray landscapes.
