Adding Taste to Your Food with Herbs for Cooking

Many of us often find ourselves wallowing in a rut occasionally when it comes to planning daily menus. In the everyday grind, sometimes it can be hard to think of something new to make for dinner. Adding a few varieties of herbs for cooking to your dishes can make a world of difference in the taste. Most of us use dried herbs for cooking and seasoning dishes, but fresh herbs for cooking are becoming more readily available for many consumers.

Types of Herbs for Cooking

Most of us have experienced Italian herbs such as basil and oregano in ready made spaghetti sauces. You might have tasted them and didn’t even know what they were. Even if you use jarred spaghetti sauce, adding a little fresh basil and even fresh oregano if you can find it, can add a new, richer taste to your dishes.

Mexican food is another cuisine that can benefit from using fresh herbs for cooking. Cilantro is a wonderful fresh herb that can readily be found in the produce section of most grocery stores. You can usually find it listed in the ingredients of jars of salsa or in homemade pico de gallo. It is quite inexpensive and can add a fresher taste to your Mexican dishes. You have to enjoy the taste of cilantro however, since it does have a rather unique taste and can taste a little strong to some people.

Other herbs for cooking that you can easily find at most markets can include rosemary, mint, chives and sage. Even if you can’t find fresh herbs in your area, it is quite easy to grow them in a windowsill. You can even find kits that have everything you need to start your own miniature herb garden stocked with the most widely used herbs for cooking. If you are really feeling adventurous, you can even add more exotic ingredients to your list such as flowers. Many flowers are edible, but you have to make sure that the ones you eat have not been sprayed with chemicals.

You never know which fresh herbs you will like until you use them in your cooking. Even if your family says they don’t like them, it’s worth using them subtly in your cooking to see if they even notice the difference. They may say that the food tastes different, but they may like it better when you start using fresh herbs for cooking.
